AI Phone Answering for Restaurants vs Hiring a Host
By the HospitalityStack editors · written from hotel & resort F&B experience
The real question
Most restaurants don't choose between an AI agent and a host. The host greets, seats, manages the waitlist and reads the room, and software can't do that. The question is who answers the phone when the host is busy. An AI agent answers every call at once, takes orders or bookings and answers FAQs (hours, parking, allergens policy), then hands anything unusual to a person.
What a host costs (official data)
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (OEWS, May 2025) reports a median wage of $15.00/hour and a mean of $15.72/hour for hosts and hostesses (restaurant, lounge and coffee shop), with about 432,690 employed nationally. Local pay, payroll taxes and benefits change your real cost, so use your own payroll numbers. Even so, adding phone coverage for a whole dinner shift costs real money, and one host still can't take two calls at once.
What AI agents publish about price
None of the three restaurant voice-AI vendors we list publish a price (checked Oct 2026). Loman asks you to request pricing, says there are no per-minute fees, and offers a Starter plan (call handling, SMS, transfers, up to 50 simultaneous calls) and a Premium plan (adds takeout and delivery ordering, phone reservations, full POS integration and payment over the phone). Slang.ai shows plans on its pricing page without prices. ConverseNow books a consultation. Treat all three as quote-only and ask whether pricing is flat or usage-based.
When AI makes sense
AI makes sense with high call volume (takeout-heavy, or many reservation calls), missed calls at peak, or long hold times. It also helps when hosts are pulled off the floor to answer the phone, or when you take calls before open and after close. It makes less sense when calls are few and complex (events, large parties, VIP regulars), or your POS or reservation system isn't supported.
How to decide
For one week, count calls by hour and how many go unanswered (most phone systems and POS call logs show this). Multiply the missed calls by your average takeout order or cover value, then compare that with a quote. Run any trial with a real menu and peak-hour noise, and use our AI phone answering buyer's checklist. Keep your host. Let the software take the phone load.
